I feel like I'm guilty of false advertising... this blog is supposed to be about homeschooling, but at this time of year, we just do a bit here and there, so I've just been going on and on about gardening. I'm hoping to get the kids more involved in the gardening, but for now, they like to swing on the rope or fill the little tub with water and put on goggles and stick their faces in and things like that. And today was no different. I did a bit of watering and pulled about three teeny weeds. I also planted out some swiss chard; when I planted it, I planted it way too close together, and I've run out of seed. So I tried just transplanting some of the swiss chard to thin it. It may have been too early, since they don't have any true leaves yet, but I didn't want the roots to get too extensive before I made the move. I have eight little seedlings transplanted now.
I checked the compost today and thought it was doing well... didn't smell, I didn't see any flies, but then I noticed two little wiggly maggots on the inside of the bin. Arg. I tossed them out and tossed on some sawdust.
D is getting much better with his multiplying. We have a Dutch blitz card deck, which is basically 4 sets of 1-10. I shuffle it, flip out two, and then he multiplies the numbers. I had the brilliant idea today to have D deal out the cards and say the multiplication out loud, so I could check that he was right and still make dinner at the same time. Then D did the same for M, except with addition.
I went out grocery shopping with the two little kids while the big kids & N were at taekwondo. As we were leaving, a motorcycle drove by the store, and R was super excited. Then a second drove by, and he couldn't believe his luck. Then the motorcycle came and parked beside us. He noticed it as we were pulling away, and said, "The motorcycle came to Mike Dean's! Hurray!" A few minutes later, he told me, "You know Mom, a motorcycle would be much faster." When I asked him where we would put the groceries, he said in the van. So I asked how we would get the groceries home. He figured we could walk back to the store and get the van and drive it home.
